June 23 (Xinhua) – On Monday Eastern Time, the three major U.S. stock indexes closed mixed. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both fell, dragged down by declines in large-cap technology stocks such as Google, while the Dow closed higher, supported by robust performances in the healthcare and industrial sectors.

In recent years, optimistic expectations for the development of artificial intelligence (AI) have been a key driver of the rally on Wall Street. However, analysts pointed out that a growing number of investors have begun to question whether the massive capital expenditures by hyperscale cloud service providers on AI infrastructure expansion are justified. This also explains why tech giants such as Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft weakened in tandem on the same day.

Bill Northey, Senior Investment Director at Bank of America, stated: “This is a highly sentiment-driven sector, so these companies tend to move together in daily trading.”

He added: “However, from a longer-term perspective, the AI data center construction field still possesses the strongest fundamentals. This includes not only the major cloud computing giants but also suppliers providing critical components and equipment for the continuous expansion of data centers.”

The next major test for the market will be Micron Technology’s quarterly earnings, scheduled for release after the close on Wednesday. Driven by the AI boom, the memory chip maker’s stock price has risen nearly 300% so far this year.

Meanwhile, international oil prices declined as the United States and Iran reached an agreement on a roadmap for reaching a final deal within the next 60 days.

U.S. Vice President Vance stated that the first round of U.S.-Iran talks in Switzerland concluded early on Monday, with “significant progress” achieved. However, differences remain on issues related to Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz.

Analysts noted that lower energy prices are undoubtedly favorable for both consumers and businesses. On the other hand, the Federal Reserve, under the leadership of new Chairman Kevin Warsh, has signaled a very hawkish stance, leading the market to believe that the Fed will prioritize restoring price stability in the near term. Such expectations have pushed U.S. Treasury yields higher and exerted pressure on the stock market.

Another market focus this week will be the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, due on Thursday. This is the Fed’s preferred core inflation gauge.
If the data comes in stronger than market expectations, it could further reinforce investors’ judgment that the Federal Reserve will maintain its hawkish stance. Previously, Warsh emphasized at last week’s policy meeting the need to continue taking measures to curb inflation.

Alphabet fell approximately 5%, triggered by the departure of two key AI talents from the company, who respectively joined Anthropic and OpenAI.

Memory giant Micron Technology surged 6.8%, hitting a new all-time high, with the company’s market capitalization reaching $1.37 trillion. The company announced a strategic agreement with Anthropic covering memory and storage AI architecture design, supply-demand collaboration, and enterprise-level applications of Claude within Micron.

Apogee Therapeutics shares surged 47% after pharmaceutical giant AbbVie announced it would acquire the biotechnology company Apogee Therapeutics for $10.9 billion.
